Barber Dimes of 1892-1916: Barber’s money was made up of dime, quarter, and half-dollar coins. Charles Barber, who was the top engraver at the US Mint, made these coins. The dimes were made from 1892 to 1916. 90% of Barber dimes are made of silver and 10% are made of copper. By the end of the 1880s, more and more people wanted the Seated Liberty image to be changed.
A contest was set up by Mint head Edward Leech to come up with a new design for the coins. Artists who were invited did not enter the event, though, because the cash prize would only go to the winner. People also sent in other entries that didn’t work either. Leech asked Barber, who was his top engraver, to come up with the new designs.
After Barber got Leech’s OK on the drawings, they were sent to President Benjamin Harrison, who gave his OK in November 1891. The public and artists alike have had different thoughts on the shape of the coin.
