Statutory Holidays in Canada (Stat Holidays Ontario) are holidays that are enforced by the federal or provincial government. If your job is under the federal government, you will get federal holidays instead of provincial holidays. These are also commonly called “public holidays” or “general holidays.”

Apart from these holidays, there are some other holidays like Remembrance Day (November 11) and Civic Holiday (first Monday of August), but these are not recognized as Statutory Holidays in Ontario. However, some employers may honour them.
Eligibility for Stat Holiday Pay
Every Statutory Holiday must be taken off from work, and employees generally receive compensation for a public holiday. If the Ontario Employment Standards Act applies to your workplace, and you observe the “first and last day rule”, you are eligible for Stat Holiday Pay.
To be eligible for Stat Holiday Pay, an employee must either complete their last regular shift before the holiday and start their first shift after the holiday, or have a reasonable excuse.
Calculating Stat Holidays Ontario Pay
In Ontario, holiday pay is calculated by multiplying that employee’s regular hours’ pay for the previous four work weeks by 20 and adding the holiday pay for those four weeks. In addition, employees working on Statutory Holidays receive a premium pay, which is 1.5 times their normal hours’ pay. This means they will receive 112 times their pay for working on a public holiday.
